Mulching may seem like an arduous task, but when done right, it’s a game-changer for your trees’ health. As the City Arborist team, we’re passionate about promoting proper tree care and mulching is a big part of that. Not only does it enhance the beauty of your landscape, but it also provides a host of benefits that contribute to the well-being of your trees.
Why Mulching Matters
Tree roots crave a cozy environment with water, nutrients, and oxygen. Proper mulching provides just that, whether you’re nurturing seedlings or mature trees. By reducing competition with turf, preventing weed growth, protecting tree roots, and moderating soil temperatures and moisture, mulch creates an ideal haven for your trees to thrive.

Step-by-Step Mulching Guide
- Choose the Right Mulch: Opt for coarse wood chips or double-hammered mulch for optimal oxygen and water movement. Avoid sheet mulches, finely textured mulches, weed barriers, and inorganic materials like rocks and rubber.
- Apply with Precision: Avoid volcano mulching! Piling mulch in a thick mound against the trunk will restrict oxygen to the roots and, if the soil remains wet for a long time, may cause roots to rot. Instead, make sure to spread mulch 2-4 inches deep under the drip line (how far the leaves/branches extend) of your trees, pulling the mulch away from the trunk of the tree. Create a wide mulch ring that resembles a donut, rather than a mountain or volcano. For most trees, a 3 foot radius is ideal.

- Annual Maintenance: Check the depth of the mulch annually and refresh it as needed to maintain the ideal depth of 2-4 inches. Use a rake to fluff it up and add new mulch as required.
- Enjoy the Fruits (and Leaves) of Your Labor: Watch your trees thrive in their well-mulched environment.

Partnering with TreesCharlotte
We’re excited to partner with TreesCharlotte to bring free trees and mulch to our community. Register for our events to get your hands on a variety of beautiful trees you can plant at home, all meant to thrive locally. The events also include mulching demonstrations to learn the best techniques for your trees.
We have these events throughout the year, both city-wide and by specific zip codes.

Mulching might not seem like it’s that important on the surface, but when you see your trees flourishing, you’ll appreciate the difference it makes. Stay tuned for more tree care tips from the City Arborist team!
